The Atlassian Central Tower at the leading edge in its application of carbon sequestering mass timber construction and will be the tallest commercial hybrid tower in the world once it is completed.

The Atlassian Central Tower in Sydney reflects Atlassian’s and Dexus’s core values around sustainability and workplace culture with a human-centered design that balances structural innovation and environmental performance.

The project celebrates the reconstructed historic shed at the ground level, the former YHA Hostel, transforming it into a civic arrival space for the site. This reinstated heritage structure defines the primary entry, accommodating the lobbies for Atlassian and the YHA Australia hotel above, while establishing a strong public interface and activating the surrounding area adjacent to Central Station. The tower floats above this historical structure, with the hotel program occupying the first five levels and the workplace floors rising above, topped with rooftop terraces.

The innovative hybrid timber structure is central to the workplace concept, shaping both form and function. Within the steel and concrete superstructure, the commercial floors are organized into seven stacked four-story “habitat” modules framed by an innovative hybrid timber structure. These habitats provide access to landscaped terraces, maximize natural ventilation, and are enclosed by energy-efficient systems and façades. Mimicking the qualities of a natural environment within a high-rise, the design enhances workplace well-being and fosters a connected experience.

The open garden spaces are key to the tower's exceptional environmental innovation and diminished ecological footprint. Taking advantage of Sydney’s temperate climate, the operable facades allow large areas of each floor to function without mechanical cooling and air handling. Together with the novel use of mass timber, the innovative facade enables the project to reduce carbon emissions by 50% over a ten year period.
The landmark Atlassian Central Tower will anchor Sydney’s emerging technology district around the historic Central Station. With its integrated focus on environmental performance, wellness, and placemaking, the tower establishes a new global benchmark for sustainable design and urban development, addressing both the climate crisis and the need for vibrant, cohesive communities.
